We all procrastinate. We all have trouble focusing on what we have to do, whether it be checking inventory or simply making tough decisions. If you want to lead a successful business, then finding effective ways to avoid any obstacles to completing tasks will put you ahead of other retailers. And sometimes, the only obstacles are the ones that you put on yourself, and eliminating those distractions around you, or those just in your head, can make a world of difference.
- Make a list of what you must do, and check them off as you go along. When you keep your goals in your head, they can get clouded by unproductive thoughts and doubts that get in the way of making progress: What if this doesn’t work? What if I’m not good enough? Who put me in charge? By simply writing out what you have to do, you can see the tasks on the page and replace those unproductive thoughts with productive ones. Then, when you finally get around to completing those tasks, it feels much more like an achievement to be able to check that box off your list. Careful planning goes a long way.
- Change where you work. Working in one place all the time can tend to get dry and boring and lead you to procrastinate, so if you can be flexible enough to make changes that will help you in your work environment, then go for it. For example, if you have to make an important phone call, maybe you can try to find a nice and quiet place outside your office to talk.
- Put the phone down. This one is a given, yet it eludes all of us. Whether it’s mindlessly scrolling through TikTok or playing Clash Royale, the phone can be one of your biggest distractions. While you may be updating your company’s social media page, it’s still very easy to veer off and scroll and procrastinate, so it helps every now and then to keep phone usage to a minimum. Even when working on the computer, taking time to step away from the screen for a moment, walk around, stretch, regroup, and come back can give you a better perspective.
- Relieve yourself of some tasks, if possible. When you have just too much on your plate, it helps to build confidence in your leadership by assigning some of your tasks to different people. You should always want to lead your business in the right direction, and sometimes the best way to do that is to work with your staff. Trust a good employee with one of your tasks. If it’s a new employee’s first day on the job, ask one of your best staff members to show them around, and give them a chance to bond.
These are just a few tips, so feel free to think of other ways you can avoid procrastinating on the job. And always remember, it doesn’t help to rush and try to get everything done quickly, either, because then you’ll only be more likely to make mistakes. Just taking a little time out of your day to pause and think can help you be more productive in the long run.
