Bed Bath & Beyond was once one of America’s most beloved stores, and it is making a comeback in mid-2026. BBB filed for bankruptcy in 2023, and it has been missed by many ever since. It was a shock when BBB announced its closure, and customers flocked to purchase as much as they could, using up their multitude of coupons.
The store was one of a kind. A destination, a treasure hunt, a scavenger hunt, a store for almost anything, a store for everything. The ultimate “Off to College” shopping trip for all. It was not just a place to buy things that you needed, but a place to wander, discover, and purchase things you didn’t even know you wanted. The assortment offering was vast but organized, options were endless, and so were the famous 20% off coupons! People collected them from everywhere and saved them because they never expired. BBB shoppers clipped the paper ones, downloaded the online ones, and utilized them constantly. It made you feel so good about your purchase because, after all, you were saving money, which helped justify a possibly unnecessary purchase. Even though the discount was minimal by today’s standards, at 20%, it was a connection to the brand, and it developed loyalty.
When BBB closed its doors, it was not because it wasn’t still loved by customers; it was negatively impacted by changes in merchandising strategies, shifts to increased offerings of its private label brand, where the price never seemed to align with the quality, and not being agile enough to pivot quickly with its technology to adapt to the rise of e-commerce.
In 2023, Overstock.com acquired the brand and relaunched it online only as Bed Bath & Beyond, Inc. This was a rebuilding period and was only available digitally while it focused on stabilizing their finances and securing their operations. After a few years, growth was occurring, revenue was increasing, and customers were returning. In April 2026, BBB acquired The Container Store, and with that, the planned return of BBB to brick and mortar became a reality. This acquisition made sense, home products with home organization products, all available in established brick and mortar locations that had access to a loyal customer following. A new niche that they will operate in, while also adding back a little bit of nostalgia by bringing back the famous Blue coupons, with the hopes that the shoppers will follow.
This new venture of rebranding will add 100+ store locations, which will offer almost everything for the home. Storage, organization, furniture, home goods, and home services. This isn’t about bringing back a tired old big box retailer, but more about launching a new niche retail model. A location where you can visit in person, see, touch and feel products, and arrange for customization or installations. It will offer a personal touch, but it will also have an online presence, which will enable it to compete in its new marketplace.
Back in the days its main competition was with Target, Walmart, Home Goods and later Amazon. The Container Store lived in an entirely different realm, competing with Home Depot, Lowe’s, and California Closets. In this newly created home solutions market, the new BBB/Container Store venture will compete for market share in this shared space but will try to differentiate itself by offering sought-after products, expert services, and personalized customization options. By blending competitive pricing, a curated assortment, and convenience with a high-touch customer experience, the venture could create a distinctive value proposition and potentially a winning formula for success.
The first store opened in mid-May in Fort Worth, Texas, and although no sales numbers have been released yet, early indicators suggest it is performing very well. Opening weekend appeared to be successful, with consumers responding well to the room-by-room home layout and the new “old towel wall”. The new locations reported heavy foot traffic. This full rebrand / hybrid model is expected to roll out to an additional 98 locations by August of this year. Although no specific dates have been released, Houston is slated as the next destination.
